St. Augustine’s has taken on many worthy projects, and individually,

our members continue to do some amazing work in our community and beyond.

COPE (Christian Outreach Program of Elkhorn) – COPE is an ecumenical ministry to families

whose needs are temporarily greater than their means. St. Augustine’s is one of 11 member churches in Western Douglas who contribute financially to provide rent/utility assistance along with clothing and household donations.  Parish members also participate in distribution of Backpack School Supplies and the Adopt-a-Family Christmas Party. Contact Carol Ott for more information.

Western Douglas County Christmas and Easter Baskets – We help pack and deliver food to families in need in our community. This outreach is sponsored by the Western Douglas County Chamber of Commerce, to which several of our members belong. Contact Del Morgan.

Western Douglas County Food Pantry serves the clients of COPE. We assist with food drives and through our Canned Food Christmas Tree. In this annual tradition, volunteers buy the canned food and assemble them into a tree in the Narthex at the beginning of Advent. After Epiphany the food is delivered to the Western Douglas Food Pantry, except for the largest cans which are taken to the Sienna Francis House for consumption by the homeless.

Native American Projects - We support the Text Book Fund and snacks for finals week for the Native American students at Creighton University. In addition, one of our members, Rita Murphy, initiated the tutoring program for these students, serves as a weekly tutor, and recruits other tutors within our parish. Contact Rita Murphy or Rebecca Messineo for more information.

Habitat for Humanity of Omaha – As a member of an ecumenical coalition of several churches (ELF), our church volunteers in the construction of a new home or renovation of an older home for a family in need. Every year, St. A's sponsors a weekend providing workers and food/refreshments. Contact June Edwards or Richard Krueger.

HETRA - Heartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy - This organization improves the quality of life both physically and emotionally of adults and children with disabilities through equine assisted activities. St. Augustine partners with them for the Fall Walk/Run. All members are encouraged to participate in this fund raiser. Contact Dustin Crichton.

DEO - Downtown Episcopal Outreach at Trinity Cathedral, Omaha is a cooperative ministry of several Episcopal parishes in Omaha partnering together to reach out to those in need in downtown, and to open the cathedral for prayer, friendship, hospitality, and monthly community lunches. Contact Deacon Dave Holmquist.

St. Monicas Behavioral Health Services for Women – We provide support to this transitional housing program for women and teen girls with substance abuse and mental health issues through our prayers and monetary donations. Our youth have held a book drive in the past to enhance their library.

Womenade of Elkhorn - This organization, established by two of our members, assists families in financial need in the Elkhorn area. They provide school supplies and clothing and meet individual needs of families in crisis. Contact Theresa Johnson or Robin Heller for more information.

St. Augustine's also donates (via first Sunday Outreach offerings) and works with a number of Episcopal Church and Women's Ministry Programs. These include: Episcopal Relief and Development which helps during disasters; Theological Education that funds seminary, EFM, and Deacon training; United Thank Offering which gives money to churches to help with their growth, development and ministry, and; projects in our companion dioceses in the Dominican Republic and the Church of Israel.
